Government Website on Abstinence
An Associated Press report today says a number of advocacy groups are denouncing a website maintained by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that promotes abstinence. (The LA Times reported on this a couple of weeks ago.) The site, 4parents.gov, advises parents to tell their teens: “abstinence is the healthiest choice. They will not have to worry about getting pregnant or getting someone pregnant. They will not have to worry about sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. Nor will they have to worry that the person they are dating is only interested in them because of sex. “
Nevermind an eight-year study released last month shows those who abstain are almost as likely to get an STD as those who don’t make a pledge to stay a virgin.
Nevermind that the teen pregnancy rate in the U.S. is at least twice that in Canada, England, France, and Sweden, and 10 times that in the Netherlands, according to Planned Parenhood . And experts say it’s the lack of sex ed taught in schools.
Forgot to mention, the website advises parents who think their kids are gay or “confused” about their sexual orientation should be taken to a therapist who shares the parents’ “values”...to work those “issues” out
.

and whats the sites address?
those who "pledge to abstain" are just as likely.
read the article for the url.
thats misleading then, cause those people are liars
i didnt bump uglies until i was 30, and i know i was at a lower risk than most people i knew
wow, i read that article like twice (the posting) and some how i still missed the url
4parents.gov
Kids who abstain (you) are not as likely to get STDs. Kids who "pledge to abstain" are just as likely to get an STD as those who make no pledge.
EDIT: I reread the article and it does say that those who "abstain" are just as likely to get an STD. I can only guess that that is a mistake and it should be those who "pledge to abstain." I can't imagine that anyone thinks that someone who has NO SEX is just as likely to get an STD as those who have sex. (Unless abstaining, allows for oral/anal sex.)

Are people upset because the government isn't (apparently) advocating promiscuity and the like? I'd be more upset with the fact that people are, for whatever reason, relying on the government to educate their kids on the sex game.

I can't get into http://www.4parents.gov. Is it just swamped with parents trying to play an active part in their child's sexual development?
*snorts milk out of his nose*

Abstaination as I understand it allows for all manner of physical contact, as long as it is not pentration.
If your genitals come in contact with infected genitals, even if no penetration has taken place, you can still catch whatever infection, and you can also get pregnant/impreganate. It all depends on the STD, on your skin integrity, and the *ahem* bodily fluids involved in the activity.
A friend of mine "abstained" all through college, and I will not reveal what ugly STD she caught, but it is a doozy, and it does not go away.
But if she were having sex instead of "abstaining" then she might have insisted on condoms, and she might not have the problem she has today.

your friend who abstained obviously put either a penis where it didnt belong, or allowed the guy to ejaculate on her. if shes so dumb as to think that she couldnt catch a disease that way, then she probably deserves the horrendous disease she now has

I'll throw $50 on herpes.
wrong...but almost as bad...
genital warts...I think the medical term is clymidia???
it is a virus like herpes (so it is in your blood stream, you can't get rid of it), it keeps coming back like herpes (though not as frequently), and it spreads like herpes if you don't wear your rubbers on your uglies...

she was very dumb and freely admits that now.
and she was studying to be a nurse...how's that for ironic?

I go with towelie. It's pretty easy to get herpes from oral sex.
A fact that someone might learn in a comprensive sex ed class, but might be glossed over when your sex ed is, don't ever, ever, ever have sex! Abstinence is 100% safe, but in a world where people define abstinence differently, people need to know what actions put you at risk for different diseases.
As for deserving an STD, ... how very Falwell of you, Peeps.

I used to work with the National AIDS and STD Hotline. No one would know more about this shit than the staff on that hotline. That being said, I never met a group of people with worse (more dangerous) sexual habits in my life. You should see the line of smokers outside of the Department of Health here. I think the more you know about health, the more you think "Fuck it, it's gonna be something that kills me. I might as well enjoy life."

had i just said, she deserves it fine, i can live with that, but in this day and age, if you think you have no chance of getting a STD from something as "simple" as oral sex, then, you are really dumb.
a guy i worked with used to stop at a particular customers house when he was working (delivering pizza). he would have anal sex with her with no protection, cause he didnt "want to get her pregnant or get a disease"
i laughed at him and said you deserve whatever you catch

I heard something interesting on the radio this morning. In one of those "this program is brought to you by" sponsorship things on public radio, it said it was sponsored by Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin. Nothing new. But their blurb said something like "Providing abstinence based education and reproductive services..."
I found that pretty interesting. I don't know if they are trying to co-opt the phrase, or spin it to their position or what. Obviously it's not a lie, it's just never been a word that I've heard them use in their publicity before.

What would be involved in abstinence based education? do they teach them about porn and masturbation?
Do you really need education that says "don't have sex"?
The problem is there are hormones and the drive to have sex and reproduce. It is evolution talking. It's like telling people, "don't eat".
(1) Porn/Masturbation is a sin. You shouldn't look at your naughty parts until you're married.
(2) You answered your own question. Yes, we are geared to fuck as much as possible, so if you want people to not have sex, you need a class for that.
