I was happy with the way things went down. It usually takes a show or two for things to really get moving. I was happy to see that scum bag women beater get what he deserved. I was kind of hoping the kid who came back from the war would have done it though.
The only real problem I had with the show was Buscemi; he's great, but it was hard for me to imagine him as the protagonist before I watched the show, and afterward I feel mostly the same way. But, one episode was probably never going to be enough for me to shake Fargo, Reservoir Dogs, etc from my head with Buscemi as the perpetual sleaze. Not that he's playing a much different character here, just one we're supposed to care about. And I don't, yet.
otherwise, though, I liked this. it was certainly very careful and labored-over, and didn't have much in the way of a huge hook (the PROHIBITION! GAMBLING! broad themes don't really count), but it was impressive. Everything looked absolutely gorgeous, cast is solid, and I feel like with a few more episodes it could develop into an engrossing serial drama.
