So, I'm reading my kid this old Sesame Street book from when I was a kid. One of the pages has a Queer Question Quiz. Q is the special letter, so they must repeat the word "queer" a half dozen times.

My wife tells me that I should read that word because it could be a derogatory term for homosexual. My thoughts are that it's a legitimate synonym for "odd."

Oh sages of RM, what say you?

Homosexual can be used as derogatory term for homosexual.

That's quite a queer thing to say.

When I told her that I was going to post it on here, she said "You can't take advise from that stupid board."

I knew it was true, but you guys have kinda driven that point home.

I grew up saying the word but never in a derogatory manner, always in the context that your book uses it. I didn't even know it was a word for the gays until I was in high school.

My sister was in high school from 92-96 and would always say queer as an insult with a very thick boston accent. Like "quay-uh". I knew it was being used as an insult but didn't realize it meant gay until a few years later.

Honestly, I don't think it's okay to say queer anymore, even as a synonym for weird.

Queer originally means odd. If someone has an issue with that, fuck them.

Having said that, I've gay friends who hate the term 'queer' but don't mind 'faggot' and some who don't mind 'queer' and hate 'faggot'. You can't please everybody.

It's about context. Q is for Queer is fine if it's a kids book-just make sure they know it means 'odd'.

Aren't there more colorful synonyms for 'queer' in Ireland? Or Australia for that matter.

These books are great. They have several incidences of characters smoking, and Bert is often cross dressing. I hope my kids pass them on to their kids.
