Judging by the history of oil, we're probably underestimating how much of everything we have left.
regarding oil you might be totally insane. Global peak oil most likely will be a problem in our lifetimes
That's what was said in 1920 (a US government official proclaimed peak oil was soon to come). And it was a widespread view in the 70s (maybe it was Geoffrey Kemp, or I might be wrong on that, but "This Time the Wolf is Here" is a Foreign Affairs piece from that time period that predicts peak oil within ~20 years). I'm not saying it's impossible, or even improbable. I'm just saying that I believe most predictions of upcoming peak minerals are going to be wrong, and this history of alaramism should be kept in mind when evaluating peak theories. The predominance of peak theories versus "we have enough" theories in opinion pieces makes sense though. Lets be honest, a "we have enough" piece would be pretty boring to read unless the issue were oil, where the peak crowd is so large and prominent.
Sorry if this post reads poorly or I'm being unclear; five beers and clear, concise language do not tend to mix.

I strongly believe there will be some sort of Malthusian disaster during my lifetime and I'm trying to come to grips with that. I just hope it's not too drawn out and painful.

It's funny because I was thinking about this deeply during the past couple of months. I hope it's not true, but it just feels like we are going to see a major world event in our lifetime. Maybe I should just stop watching shit like "The Road" and "Book of Eli".

Population will at least double by 2050. It's just a matter of time. Hard to think about.

What is Malthusian? And population is going to double by 2050? Source? I can't see countries with an expanding middle class expanding in population themselves (since greater wealth tends to = lower pop. rate, to my knowledge)

Im pretty sure We'll encounter a nuclear event of some scale in our lifetime. Probably terrorist based but maybe on an international combat level. It'll probably be about oil too I reckon.

As far as population growth, we are at approximately 6.8 billion right now. Most estimates I've seen put it at 8-10 billion by 2050.
I'm not such a believer in doomsday predictions, Malthusian included. Science and economics can work surprisingly well together to avert catastrophe (see the Green Revolution of the 60s/70s for an example).
Yeah I thought 8-10 was the general prediction as well.

Yeah, I think terror-based nuclear attack is the most probable type. The logic of Mutually Assured Destruction makes interstate nuclear warfare improbable in my eyes (although a state like North Korea, I just can't be sure). The main security problem of state level nuclear proliferation is that some of these weapons could make it into terrorist hands, and the idea of a nuclear domino theory heightens this possibility (though this nuclear domino theory is fairly succinctly discredited here).

I completely disagree with this. Human ingenuity, especially in the past century or two, have almost always found a way to avoid all the doomsayers' disasters. Guys like Jenner, Salk and Sabin put critical dents into childhood diseases, Norman Borlaug averted the cries of food shortages, and so on. We're already seeing developments in electric transportation that could put the whole peak oil debate to rest. Things have never been better than they are now, and they'll get even better in the future.

I'm in this crowd too.
