I was listening to a Dylan comp and Masters of War came on. I can't think of a more bitter Dylan song, but is it the most bitter song of all time? Something about the minor strumming and the incredibly nasty, pointed lyrics in that song make me wonder if it can be topped.

Prove me wrong, RM

Idiot Wind is another extremely bitter Dylan song.

"It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe."

This is clearly more socially acute than Masters of Gay

I'm talking about real, honest to god vitriol. No jealousy, heartbreak or any other sort of factors that cloud the emotion of the narrator. Just pure hate. "I'll stand over your grave 'til I'm sure that you're dead"

Well I hope I don't die too soon
I pray the Lord my soul to save
Oh I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave
Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live
long enough to savour
That's when they finally put you in the ground
I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down

Elvis Costello

I'd second the nomination of the Eddie Vedder version of that song for that reason.

He's great for these.

"Now you're masquerading as a pale powdered genius
Whose ever bad intention has been purged
You could've walked out any time you wanted
but face it, you didn't have the courage
I guess that makes you a full time hypocrite
or some kind of twisted dilettante
Funny though people don't usually get so ugly
'til they think they know what they want
Scratch your own head stupid
Count up to three
Roll over on your back
Repeat after me
Don't you know how to be dumb?"

-

"And when he calls home with his alibi
she says, 'is this really necessary?'
But she knows that a man can't be a man
unless he's punishing his secretary"

-

"'I can't lie on this bed any more - it burns my skin.
You can take the truthful things you've said to me and fit them on the head of a pin"

-

"Don't say you love me if it's just a rumor
Don't say a word if there's any doubt
Sometimes I think that love is just a tumor
You gotta cut it out"

-

"She'll look pale but feign indifference as they're handing out the prizes
Spitting daddy's words of wisdom and her ugly sister's tranquillizers"

-

"I wish you luck with a capital 'F'"

I'd nominate "Baby Bitch" by Ween.

It's been awhile since I've seen you smile
But now you've come back again
Came into the room and you saw my girl
And you asked her how long it's been
"A year," she said, and you shook your head
Said "I'm surprised it's gone on that long"

Baby, baby, baby bitch
For words I am at a loss
Baby, baby, baby bitch
I'm better, now please fuck off

What else you gonna say while you're back on your stay?
Maybe something, maybe nothing, we'll see
It's just too bad, you're beautiful I guess
I wasn't for you and you weren't for me

Baby, baby, baby bitch
Please slip back into yourself
Baby, baby, baby bitch
Go conquer someone else

People say "How beautiful, how sweet, how kind"
You're perfect, you've got nothing to hide
But I for one have seen the sun
And the bitch you've locked up inside
Got fat, got angry, started hating myself
Wrote "Birthday Boy" for you, babe
Now skinny and sick and paranoid
Without a cent to my name

Baby, baby, baby bitch
Fuck you, you stinkin' ass ho
Most beauty I've seen, you come from a dream
But I can't close my eyes anymore
No I can't close my eyes anymore
No I can't close my eyes anymore
