I've been meaning to get back into photography, this is definitely stoking that fire. I sort of dipped my toe in a bit in my late teenage years but got out of the habit as time went on, my daughter being born has really made me want to pick it up as a hobby again.
What cameras are you guys using? Digital SLR's? It's been a long time for me, any recommendations would be wonderful.

I use a Nikon D40 SLR. It's the low-end Nikon but I'm quite happy with it. I haven't checked in a while but I think prices of SLRs have come down quite a bit and you can probably get a pretty good deal if you shop around. Good luck and be sure to post your shots in here.
The D40 is a cracking little camera, I had one, but managed to get my hands on a D200 with a Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 lens, wonderful piece of kit, unfortunately I went on holiday to Mexico, final full day there we went to see Chichen Itza. Beautiful day, then all of a sudden the clouds rolled in and we got caught in the worst thunderstorm I've ever witnessed, the camera got soaked and is now fooked!

Went to this ridiculous 5k-with-obstacles race called the Warrior Dash today. It was very odd. I'm still not sure why all these people paid $70 to do this to themselves, but it made for some good photo ops. I actually shot people today, something I'm usually a little timid to do. This really wasn't my scene, and I'd never go back, but here are my five favorite shots of the day:

Yeah I wasn't really that enthused about them until I started playing around with them in iPhoto. I think I'll end up framing two or three of those pics.

This summer I was playing around with shutter speeds and got some great lightning pics. I should post them someday. I would love to get into photographing people more, but like Argo I'm a little timid about it.

I think photography might be one of those things at which I'd prefer to be an amateur. It definitely would have been a lot less fun for me if I'd set out to take great pictures.
My wife and I spent one of our last days in Philadelphia walking around Old City snapping pics of rowhouse windows, doors, and architecture. We framed a few of the window pictures and get compliments on them when folks come over. There's something about being completely green and unselfconscious about the creative process that I find refreshing and very, very enjoyable.
I've never really thought about it, but would have to agree with you. It's very rewarding to me as an amateur when I get that one great picture that stands out. Kind of like your smokestack ones. But I've always had a thing for old industrial buildings and also abandoned buildings.

This is Kinzua Bridge in Pennsylvania. When it was built, it was the highest railroad bridge in the world. Several years ago a tornado knocked it down and the remnants are still there. I really wish I had remembered my tripod because the trees just look messy.
