Actually the last time I saw I+W I was really, really bored. It was a lot of boring extended folk jams. For me, I+W is about the lyrics, not the music, but this was especially bad because they weren't even good jam sessions. FTR this was on the Shephard's Dog tour at FSU, which is his alma matter.

I'm not saying Sam isn't wonderful on his albums, because he is. I'm just saying that Iron and Wine was the most disappointing concert I've been to in the last four years because a good chunk of it sounded like a group of freshmen on the green or a Methodist praise band set.

Honestly, some of the most emotional musical moments I've ever heard came from guitars that were essentially "freshman on the green", except that they were more like "slackers in the park". Thinking that it sounded great was probably a combination of me willing to stop and listen and those guys/girls playing from their hearts.
I guess what I'm getting at is that even if you love the band you are going to see, sometimes you have other stuff going on in your head or in your life that prevent you from really hearing the music. Buying a ticket and attending a show is seldom as spontaneous of an event as passing freshman on the green.
