I logged on to post this in durdencommatyler's interview thread (and I still may), but I think that I'd like to hear everyone's answer here. So, what did your town's last really memorable weather entail? What do you remember most about it/what were you doing during those few days?

Last spring we had a shit ton of rain and some flooding. We only had a few inches of water in the basement but there was a section of town that's on the base of the blue hills that had like 6 feet of water in people's back yards

I sat around my house with candles most of the day and read.

Something like that happened in the neighborhood I grew up in back in 1994. Then in 2005, Hurricane Rita scarred the area further.

He said recent, guys.

Anyway, a few weeks ago, the majority of my town went without power for 3+ days. Wind/rain combo took our two of our towers running the electric from the hydro plant to town. Only one very essential part of the city grid had power (fire & police).

It really stressed how important technology is. For a time period, the only cell tower we had was down, so no calling/texting. Our phone lines were intermittent. One of the providers (internet) was out the entire 3 days, which meant most of the town had no internet. Not being able to communicate even within our company via email or phone (voip phones) for 3 days was a bit of a joke. Work really stalled.

People had nothing to do. The restaurants were shut down. Most of the grocery places were closed. Blah blah.

I felt like I needed to go out and buy some jacks, a jump rope and sidewalk chalk. Unfortunately it was wet, so two of those wouldn't have been very enjoyable.

The last weather event that really stuck with me was a fog that covered the city for a couple of days.

A couple of years ago Mount Redoubt had a series of eruptions. Redoubt sits on the west side of Alaska's Cook Inlet, my hometown of Kenai resting on the east side. I work remote and happened to be on a job on the west side, apprixmately sixty miles north of the volcano. We were quite fortunate as each time the volcano let loose, the wind took the subsequent ash plumes south into the fuller portion of the Inlet and as far into the Gulf of Alaska. Flights were cancelled intermittently to and from Anchorage for about a week's span. One eruption did send a light dusting of ash our way but the fallout was rather minimal. We simply killed the equipment and stole a few hours of overtime before it was deemed safe to head back to camp. She really let loose back in '90 or '91 when I was in 8th grade. Track season was cancelled and the snow was a horrific gray until Spring washed it away. Volcanic ash is terrible on engines and can damage the lungs. It also fucks up 8th grade track season. Some wiki if you might be interested... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Redoubt as well a few photos I snapped, the first with an ash cloud dispersing hours after an eruption and one of her steaming...
