I still am perplexed at how that coalition ever came to be. How stable is the government in that regard?
The other coalition (i.e. Lib-Lab) would never have worked: it would be dependent on the whims of Scottish and Welsh nationalist MPs, and MPs from Northern Ireland. Also, it would be viewed as a coalition of the losers. Thus, I think those ideas were influencing the thinking of the Lib Dems. Also, I'm not too sure exactly how "left wing" the leadership of the Lib Dems actually are. They have a lot more in common with the neo-liberal cabal in charge of the tories than the (at times) authoritarian New Labour regime.
I still think they should have had a minority Tory government than this coalition. They're getting a lot of mud flung at them for unpopular co-alition policies. This could affect the stability in the long term, but it seems pretty solid for now. Clegg, the Lib Dem leader, seems to passionately believe in the project. If the coalition's policies cause a double dip recession, however, I think he's leading his party into electoral oblivion.

ROLL ON A 32 COUNTY REPUBLIC !!!
I take it you're a nationalist? I'm curious because the Republic's troubles must surely be affecting thinking up north about a United Ireland. If anything, it seems to have kicked that theory into the long grass for a few decades... what do you think?

I see. I'd definitely agree that a minority Tory gov't would have made the most sense.
