I only just got into the Doctor Who revival thru a friend over the last couple months, caught up on all the episodes, and then writer Steven Moffat goes and creates a new Sherlock Holmes series bringing the characters into modern day London. The first one just aired on the BBC in the last couple days, it's already on the usual torrent sites. The sucky part is, they're only doing three different 90 minute episodes for the whole first season, so only 2 left to go :shake:

I wasn't familiar with the guy they've got for Holmes, but The Office's Martin Freeman is Watson.

The first episode they adapted was, appropriately enough, A Study In Scarlet which tells the origin story of how Holmes & Watson meet (here called A Study In Pink) and they changed a fair amount of the plot, and not just out of necessity of telling it in 2010. Overall I like it so far, but I'm not crazy about how they're calling each other by their first names. Hearing "Sherlock" and "John" is just wrong.

i saw an article on the guardian about how this is good.

i guess bbc is looking at making more episodes now because of the critical reaction.

Episode 1 - Fantastic.
Episode 2 - Poor.
Episode 3 - Pretty good again.

I'm definitely looking forward to the next series - although I thought their portrayal of Moriarty was a bit... off.

I'll admit, the way they're doing Moriarity so far just doesn't quite seem right.

Though I liked how in the first episode they played it out so that all the existing SH fans would likely naturally think that Mycroft was Moriarity when first introduced.

Yeah that was awesome!

I just really like the portrayal of Sherlock as a "high-functioning sociopath"

This has officially started airing on PBS here in the states, so a lot more people are suddenly going to have watched it.

My thoughts exactly. Episode 2 focused too much on action, and not some very good action either.

I really liked the first two but fell asleep in the middle of episode three, although it might have been because i was tired.

I just reading recently that Cumberpatch had auditioned to be the 11th Doctor, and Matt Smith originally had tried out for the Watson role in this. I can totally see Cumberpatch in DW, the characters have many similarities, but Smith is very hard to imagine as Watson.

Yeah. Benedict's Holmes was basically a version of The Doctor (so much so that the reviewer in The Grauniad called his review Sherlock Whomes). He'd be a superb Doctor - but then, we already have the absolute best man for the role in place at the moment. :D

Yup. Y'see, episode 1 was primarly written by Moffat, hence its awesomeness. I don't know where they went wrong with episode 2, the drop off in quality was so startling. At least they redeemed with with the final ep.

Even though their portrayal of Moriarty was a little more.... well, I guess showy and pansy-like for my tastes, I liked how they conceived a new overall story for the 3rd episode, but which itself had elements of I think at least three different Holmes stories, at my count. I can think of the Bruce Partington Plans and the Five Orange Pips right off the top of my head.

I have little or no knowledge of Sherlock Holmes so anything they produce is a treat really. I hear the books are fantastic though.

The new series started on BBC tonight. It was excellent. Heartily recommend tracking it down or perhaps BBC America will show it. It was bloody good.
Hound of the Baskervilles next week:)
