I read a review that claimed Bridges took aspects from a lot of those old school country musicians like Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, etc.
The preview they showed on the Tonight Show was great. His career had tanked and he was playing in bowling alleys. So there's Jeff Bridges in a bowling alley, looking down on his luck, and even talking like The Dude.

I live two blocks away from an indie movie theater, and two times today I went to line up for the movie, once 10 minutes before and the other 15 minutes before, and both times I was in a line that stretched just around the block, and for this movie. By the time the previews started I was still in line, and I like the previews, so I ducked out both times and going to wait until like a Monday night.
Anyway it was ridiculous. I didn't know word spread so rapidly with this one.

Finally saw this via Netflix a few weeks ago...man, what a great movie. 3 1/2 stars out of four for me.
They really nailed some of these characters, who could have been hollow cliches. It was refreshing to see the Colin Farrell character still loyal and trying to help Bad Blake.
Going to get the soundtrack now. Bridges deserved that Oscar.

It was incredibly cool. I did think, though, that it invested a little too much in the on stage performances. I wouldn't want to cut them too heavily...I just think that twelve minutes less "Jeff Bridges on stage" could have twelve minutes more developing his relationship with the woman, the boy, or the bottle.

Looks good. is it just me or does anyone else think Jeff Bridges is morphing into Kris Kristofferson?! hehe!
Waylon Jennings
Waylon was headlining large venues and arenas in the 70's and 80's not bowling alleys. I was thinking more along the lines of a country singer/songwriter like Billy Joe Shaver, who incidentally gets mentioned by Robert Duvall's character in the movie.

I really liked the on stage performances. I think everything - character wise - was developed just fine...the ending...well, that was the only somewhat sour note.
While I am happy that everything turned out pretty swell for all involved, that's not the case in most of these kind of situations and to tie it up that neatly in a bow took a little away from the film's honesty. Still a very, very solid film.
