I'm teaching two sections of "The Short Story" (35 students each). We'll be mostly reading contemporary American writers, with some other periods mixed in for variety.
The two courses I'm taking are: ENG 590: Envisioning America:
This course is designed to introduce you to the ways in which the terms, study, and reception of visual culture have impacted the dominant modes of analyses in American Studies. The course is divided into roughly 8 sections, each functioning to show the ways in which visuality has affected the production and study of American culture. We will start by looking at the ways in which differing theories of vision and the image have been promulgated, to contrasting ends. Then, with a heightened understanding of the terms and history behind optics and the study of visual culture, we will then explore the relationships between photography & 19th century America, imagism & the beginning of American cinema, spectacle & US Imperialism, Whiteness Studies and Critical Race theory, television & citizenship, and museums and the construction of US historic display. If time allows, we will also alight upon the connections between fashion and/or digital nationalism.
ENG 560: Studies in European Texts No course description yet, the prof is sort of reclusive, although I've heard rumors it's going to be a Proust/Kafka class

so far just exsistential philosophy. there's a lock on my account and i cant register for some reason.
means ill be playing the waitlist game
1) does your registration web site offer a code or shorthand notification relating to the hold? if so, this information can be useful in discussions with students affairs or the registrar. 2) often, a parking ticket or another unpaid fee will result in a hold on a student's account. you should contact your registrar's office to inquire about this. 3) how were you able to register for one class in spite of the hold? 4) how does a waitlist relate to the issue of registration? a waitlist commonly refers to the status of limbo between a university's receipt of application and actual, initial admission. if you were previously enrolled as a student and are now registering for further courses, a waitlist should not become relevant. 5) what's the point, really?

Particular emphasis will be placed throughout the course upon remedies, both specific and monetary. Other equitable doctrines such as breach of confidence will be considered.
LAW 2503 - Criminal Law and Procedure
Quote:
The Criminal Law part of the course (Weeks 1-9) opens with an examination of the nature and purposes of the criminal law and the general principles of criminal responsibility at common law. It then examines the basic elements of criminal offences and the distinction between offences of full fault, strict and absolute liability. The topics that follow include a selection of substantive offences: the offences of dishonesty, unlawful homicides, and sexual and non-sexual non-fatal offences against the person. There follows an examination of the extended forms of liability: attempt and complicity. The course then proceeds to cover the major criminal defences of self defence, necessity and duress as well as denials of criminal responsibility on the ground of incapacity resulting from mental illness or impairment and intoxication. Criminal Procedure (the final three weeks of the course) has particular reference to constraints on police during investigation, prosecutorial practice and the requirements of a fair trial.
it's a master's program and i'm going part time due to work.
i don't like the format of the class, i think i would get very little out of it. the main focus is auctions, and the format is that students will be reading and making presentations on research papers selected by the teacher. also, each student has to turn in a research paper at the end. i don't see why i should take this class instead of getting copies of the papers and reading them myself. waste of time.
