Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong section. It kinda straddles both OB and this place.

So, anyone else here share my (very nerdy) love for the music in these old school consoles? I know Megaman's music is rightly praised, but what about the 16 bit generation? There are some great tunes to heard farting out of the old speakers:

And just for shits and giggles:

Naturally I've left off loads (including Sonic 2, whose music is superlative). Any other favourites?

Little known fact. Michael Jackson wrote and recorded the music for Sonic the Hedgehog but when he heard the finished product on the game asked them to remove his credit for it as it is was nowhere near sounding as good as he wanted it.

So that X-men game track that StoneIrons posted is by a composer called Tom Follin, who was one of the few early video game composers you could call a genius without irony. Guy got some ridiculous sounds out of the limited hardware of every system he wrote game music for, whether it was the commodore 64, nes, snes or genesis. He was on a different level. Couple of my favorite 16-bit songs of his (other than that X-men track):

Another guy you could call a genius--Yuzo Koshiro. He got some great bass sounds out of the Genesis FM Synth. His work on Revenge of Shinobi is pretty great, but he became a legend for his work on STREETS OF RAGE, which is the one video game series soundtrack that challenges Mega Man for that sense of momentum and propulsion.

BONUS: Yuzo Koshiro did a DJ set of his music from Streets of Rage (called "Bare Knuckle" in Japan) at a club in Tokyo in 2002. Pretty righteous. Here's part 1 of 5

Other great Genesis songs (and some SNES songs for good measure):

Secret of Mana probably had the best soundtrack of any of those old Square RPGs.
