Hello,

Its been awhile, but my quest was to bring up of my favourite early Pink Floyd tunes once in awhile. Have a listen and thanks for reading!

Paintbox - The lyrics may not be that great, but I think this is one of their best. I am huge fan of Wright. Musically, I find this song transports me somehow, its percussion is so tight. Its really well recorded. Headphones do it justice. Relics sounds great in general. Paintbox on a sunny day, pure gold!

Past tunes: Point me at the Sky, Unknown SOng

Syd plays guitar on "Paintbox". It was released as a single shortly before he left the group.

Speaking of "Relics", it could have been so much better. Instead of including all of their rare bits, they padded the album out with songs from previous albums. Disappointing.

good one! i'm also a fan of Wright's early songs (pre-DSotM). he had a very interresting taste for arrangements and song structure.

as for Relics, when i first bought it, almost all of it was unknown to me and it played a major role in making me the fan that i am. i think that it was the idea of the thing - a bit for the rarities and another to shine a light on their early stuff for the uninitiated. it's still the best compilation they released.

"Relics" was also my introduction to early Floyd. The "More" songs were important because I went out and bought that album next and it's still one of my favorites.

But imagine if it had "Apples & Oranges", "Vegetable Man" and "Scream Thy Last Scream" on it! Plus stereo versions of "Point Me At The Sky" and "It Would Be So Nice"...it would have made the album even more special.

agreed. i don't understand why they haven't released Vegetable Man and Scream Thy Last Scream yet. it's a shame really.

Totally baffling.

When Roger Waters was last asked didn't he give the impression he thought they'd already been released?

Anyway, Paintbox is great. A favourite early Floyd track.

Someone asked him if they were ever going to release "Vegetable Man" and he said "it came out on a compilation a few years ago, you should seek it out". Nobody knows what the fuck he's talking about.

When Gilmour was asked about it, he denied any involvment in releasing it because he "wasn't in the group then". However, he was put in charge of a new Syd compilation last year and he could have included it then, but he didn't. The mind reels.

Thankfully, an excellent quality stereo mix has been bootlegged, so ultimately it doesn't matter much anyway.

Relistened to this today, a timeless classic for me. Musically I think it creates one of their best soundscapes and it always transports me, especially at the beginning and end of the tune.

While it is true that relics should have had at least a few more rarities (Ie. Apples and Oranges) and a few less repeats, the combination of See Emily Play/Remember a Day/Paintbox/Julia Dream and Cyrrus Minor make it stellar. If only they would have let Syd sit in with them on more tunes, even if only to lay down some guitar tracks like Paintbox and Remember a Day. He could have added even more to some other great early Floyd songs.

Relics would be great on a new LP if they havn't already, the old versions are sketchy.
