there's a lot of ground to cover here, mostly in the 90's i listened to the radio and had a few cd's. i really got to know bands when napster came out and i was tracking down albums of all these bands i heard on the radio. so i'll share some of the goodness discovered looking back to what i loved in the mid 90's.
first i'd say check out cracker. david lowery's one of my favorite singers/lyricists. his songwriting by now seems to have matured and got boring in recent albums, but there's a few really great records.
you might know them for low
they have some really great music dancing between alternative and country sounds.
this is one of my favorites.
david lowery's lyrics are really full of a lot of substance and worth paying attention to. great combination of wit and wistfulness
nostalgia, good simple tune complete with more cosmonaut imagery, the lyrics really get to me,especially when the chorus kicks in.
this is pretty plainly arranged, but the song is fantastic.
a lot of the songs i wanted to show aren't on youtube unfortunately. but they have a pretty rich discography worth mining. if you like what you hear, let me know i'll hook you up.
i'll be back with more later.
(spacehog and geggy tah, i never got beyond the singles. though i have the albums, they never stuck.)

Were you into the Toadies, Danny?
I believe he was, Reid, I believe he was. I bet he still spins Rubberneck and Hell Below, Stars Above, now and then.
this is true.
There was a whole Chicago scene of bands that were there with Local H which is worth digging through some of their stuff. The standout had to be Triple Fast Action:
I think brian st clair who is now in local h was a member of Triple Fast action.
I'm also a big fan of The Lupins, which was a chicago band, and I believe one of the members ran a chicago q101 radioshow called Lance and Stoley. The Rat's got heaven was their single as i recall. Take was their breakout on the dumb and dumber soundtrack. They didn't do much after that, but I dig their stuff.
