Why, oh why do people who have never even BEEN to the states adopt an American drawl? I have a guy who sits opposite me in work who suffers from this affliction and apparently put on the accent a few years ago.

So why, RM? WHY!?

The NI accent generally speaking isnt that far away from an american accent though? Your ears would hear the difference but it really isnt that much of a leap.

Though Ive always loved the way vowel sounds get bent into strange shapes up north:)

Compared to broad Belfast, generally, yes. But I think this individual is doing it to look "cool", not for aesthetics.

...really? I would have imagined our accent was really different!

See, I generally don't like our accent. Southern Irish, though, is very melodic. Ours can be nasal and grating.

Haha really? I was mainly being facetious because of all the times I've heard it being referred to as a "Sepo" accent by some aussies.

Yeah honestly, I think that's the root of it. It's probably because he needs a culture (any culture) to latch onto. He needs shot.

Do you know what kind of accent he has adopted? There are a lot of "American" accents, especially just on the East Coast.

I'm not American. I just grew up watching a lot of American television and movies. This pseudo American accent just kinda happened.
