Does anyone know why the two families were at war with each other?? I can't find anywhere where it explains this... :?

Family feud. No more than that. It has its roots in a power struggle. They're both nobility in the town. Power, influence, jealosy. Thats basically it.

Exactly right. I think Shakespeare wanted the stress and focus to be on the intense thematic material that came out of the love struggle, not on the details. So that part of it didn't have much depth to it, as far as I remember!

The party scene in this sucks. Especially if you compare it to Zeffirelli's.

I heard that Juliet's family had tonsils, and Romeo's didn't, so both families were forbidden to socialize with each other.

The Montague and Capulet families were a literary device long before Shakespeare used those names. They show up in one of Dante's works, and although the different versions of this particular story hadn't used applied those names prior to Shakespeare's work, they were pretty much there for the taking. I would think that, to a degree, Shakespeare used them so that he wouldn't have to give too much background regarding the feud.

It's been a long while, but I'm pretty sure the text doesn't give an initial cause for the fight. Mostly, it was a nice backdrop to use because plays featuring problems or conflict in royal or powerful families were very popular at the time. Some people try to draw allusions to various real-world scenarios, from the plausible to the extreme, but Shakespeare borrowed or nicked so much of this particular story that it's not likely to be one of his more profound works.

So, long story short, if I'm remembering correctly....the families were fighting simply because they'd always been fighting.

Bill Shakespeare was the Tyler Perry of his day.
