He is a leading man in some movies, but for the most part he plays the eccentric character. He is one of the best and one of my favorite actors under 40.

I've always liked David Paymer, though I don't know how underrated he is at this point.

Probably my favorite character actor ever is the dearly departed JT Walsh.

I love Michael Shannon. He's been on my radar since I saw him a great movie that got very little press, called Shotgun Stories.

Underrated or not, some character actors I am always excited to see show up in a movie:
