It doesn't get any funkier than the Ohio Players Fopp.

Any "Nomo" albums are funky as fuck. It's like some of the old afrobeat (which is also pretty funky). Antibalas, etc.

No one's yet mentioned the mother of them all, Parliament's Funkentelechy vs the Placebo Syndrome. Immerse yourself in a lot of P-Funk.

Not traditional funk like some of the others mentioned, but it does have a really nice groove and bassline.

How did I miss this thread? Also, how has Sly Stone not come up? There's a two disc comp out there that has everything a casual fan would need of his. And no Mothership Connection? Too obvious? Some 70s stuff that hasn't already been mentioned:

Dorothy Parker - Afroharping (great jazz-harpist's funkier companion the her other equally good album, The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Parker)

War - The World is a Ghetto (not really pure funk, rock and latin tinged)

In a Jungle Groove is my fav James Brown cd, I really don't like The Payback all too much.Anything live from him up through the mid seventies is also bound to be good.

Rufusized by Rufus (featuring Chaka Khan on vocals). Also the subtly-titled Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan.

Bill Whithers' first two albums are really, really good. Obviously stuff like Lean on Me doesn't scream "funk," but much of his other stuff (like Use Me) is in the vain of what you might like.

Average White Band is way overlooked. Try Soul Searching by them.

Eddie Hazel's solo album is great, although more psychedelic than funk. Bootsy's early solo career is nearly as good as Parliament.

There are also a number of compilations like Cold Heat and What It Is that have a wide overview of the genre.

i love AWB. Cut the Cake and AWB are both great albums.

Soul Searchers are another amazing band. they were sampled a lot in the early days of hip hop if i recall correctly.
