The more someone else owns, the less the rest of us can own (unless an economy of sharing is established, which our mostly laissez-faire economy is far from advocating).
Of course, those who own lots can use their powers of persuasion (powers they have in abundance - media, military, cultural norms) to convince us that we can work harder and be like them someday.
