Rave On Buddy Holly, a new collection coming out June 28 via Fantasy Records/Concord Music Group in honor of Holly's 75th birthday, features 19 reinterpretations of Holly’s most beloved work. These aren’t straight-up covers, however. A press release for the set explains that each artist involved in the project “clearly felt free to explore radically new interpretations.” British pop outfit Florence and the Machine, for instance, is said to “bring an industrial New Orleans vibe” to the legendary chug of “Not Fade Away.”
“As the tracks from various contributors were gathered for the album, we seemed to be gathering pieces of a complex and original puzzle … that traces back to the roots of rock’n'roll and shapes so much of the music that followed,” project supervisor Randall Poster explained in a statement.
Other musicians stamping their individual touches to the Holly tunes include Paul McCartney doing “It’s So Easy,” Lou Reed tackling “Peggy Sue,” the Stokes’ Julian Casablancas doing “Rave On” and blues rockers the Black Keys taking on “Dearest,” Florence + The Machine covering "Not Fade Away," Modest Mouse taking on "That'll Be the Day" and Cee Lo Green singing "Baby, You're So Square." Paul McCartney also offers his take on "It's So Easy" and Lou Reed lays down a blazing "Peggy Sue."
