I have to pick up one of my younger sisters from KU next week.
Best BBQ in Kansas City? Go!
Two are a cut above the rest.
http://www.oklahomajoesbbq.com/ (2 locations...go to the midtown location...it's in a gas station)...best in KC by a country fucking mile. I usually go with the pulled pork, ribs, or the "Okie Joe" sandwich. Get an order of gumbo or red beans & rice on the side. The fries and onion rings are pretty standard. Not a big fan of their brisket (I like pulled/shredded brisket, not sliced brisket).
http://www.rjsbbq.com/ is a good runner-up. Get the Memphis Po' Boy with pulled pork. Their ribs are also really good. Much better service than OK Joe's.
Arthur Bryant's and Gates are overrated, and Fiorella Jack's Stack is where the bourgeois go to pay $17 for a dessicated smoked chicken breast. That place sucks.

From Keith Law's chat yesterday:
Josiah (omaha)
Kansas City food recommendations? particularly BBQ?

I have been to one place there, Oklahoma Joe's. Very good, but I was expecting life-altering.
OK Joe's was phenomenal. I tried a lot of their BBQ. Had a pulled pork sandwich, brisket sandwich, half slab of ribs, rice and red beans and bbq beans. Also had a taste of their gumbo. Gumbo was possibly my favorite. Also, the sauce with a lot of kick--I assume this is more traditional mustard-based BBQ sauce?
I'm in Austin again and had Franklin's yesterday and might not be as good as OK Joe's.
I love that part of the movie, where... he takes the package he held onto for years. Followed fate and wa slike... "Here is you new life." There is no more old one.
