probably the worst thing to ever happen to music. i know nothing says "I'm a real artist" like interrupting or ending your song with an earsplitting and useless high pitched feedback or sommething, but can this shit stop? with headphones on, it hurts.
worst offenders: Beck's entire Odelay album Nirvana a few Mogwai songs (We're no Here) this one just happened to be on. not really a bad one. (i'll update as the list grows)

I love feedback in songs when used intelligently. Noise for the sake of noise can get a little annoying if its always there, but squalls, swells, and blasts of guitar in the right place can really color songs in a cool way.

Hang on, are you talking about feedback/guitar noises, or vocal screeches? If the latter, I take it you're not a fan of Black Metal. (Neither am I.) Same reason I'm not into Hardcore, or any 'core'... The musicianship is sometimes excellent, but the voices are fucking annoying. I don't mind death growls (they're less annoying because they're deeper), but I wouldn't mind if Meshuggah and Cult of Luna (my favourite current metal bands) would try to sing a bit.
I think Nirvana screamed so much (and other 'grunge' bands, probably) because of their hardcore punk leanings.

feedback mostly, or some other method they use. Songs like Radio Friendly Unit Shifter (the intro). badass song though.
Yeah, I don't really like the whole 'noise' thing either - never understood why people wanted to hear 'noise' music. I hear Sonic Youth played/play 'noise rock'... haven't heard enough to know.
That said, there's one album which is nothing but ambient noise produced by guitars, which I like, 'October Music' by Belong. But that's not supposed to be grating and ear-piercing, just atmospheric.

I like the use of "noise," when it's done right.
Maybe one of the first examples of this is The Beatles' I Want You (She's So Heavy), where the white noise builds slowly to overwhelm the music at the end of the track.

Sonic Youth is guilty of this. I love this band, but sometimes they go a bit overboard on the "hey, we're artist, and listen to our wonderful art via guitar feedback for 10 minutes" thing. For me, it ruins some of their songs. Overall though, SY is one of my all time favorites.
