Silverchair Announce 'Indefinite Hibernation'



In what may come as a surprise to their fans or those who only remembered them from the '90s, Australian rockers Silverchair have announced they're going on an "indefinite hibernation."

"We formed Silverchair nearly 20 years ago when we were just 12 years old. Today we stand by the same rules now as we did back then ... if the band stops being fun and if it's no longer fulfilling creatively, then we need to stop," the members -- singer-guitarist Daniel Johns, bassist Chris Joannou and drummer Ben Gillies -- wrote in a joint letter on their website.

"Therefore after much soul searching we wanted to let you know that we're putting Silverchair into 'indefinite hibernation' and we've decided to each do our own thing for the foreseeable future."

The band skyrocketed to international fame on the strength of their 1995 double-platinum debut album, 'Frogstomp,' which was recorded when the members were only 15 years old and featured the single 'Tomorrow.' Silverchair's next four albums topped the charts in Australia but their international success declined. During their career, Johns battled anorexia and arthritis, and went through a publicized divorce with singer Natalie Imbruglia.

Silverchair had been working on a new album but called it quits when it became "increasingly clear that the spark simply isn't there between the three of us." The group revealed they were all working on separate projects at the moment, and ended the statement by writing, "With Sincere Thanks For Your Understanding. Sweet Dreams. Daniel, Ben and Chris."

Silverchair I hope you ate a lot of raw fatty fish to bulk up for hibernation

you guys should also eat a bunch of sticks and tree bark, that will create a seal in your lower colon so that you don't go bm during hiberation

when you're broke 5 years from now and wish to come out of hiberation you will have a large and refreshing b'movement

Indefinite Hibernation would be a great lp title.

They had one good song on their last album back in 09 or whenever, but yeah, they've been hiding for a while.

I thought they just did that fat boy hard to drink the water song. They have still been putting out records? Holy cow, learn something new every day.

I actually liked a few songs from Neon Ballroom... Miss You Love and Anna's Song. Also, I remember liking the song Greatest View:

Diorama is amongst my guiltiest of pleasures. I really enjoy that album.

I am embarrassed to say in my youth I saw this band twice. Or was it three times? No, I'm pretty sure it was twice.

At least the Mark of Cain were the support at the first show. They're kind of alright.
