Just finished my 1st viewing. I don't know how David Lynch gets away with making films like this but somehow he does. Its completely illogical, ridiculous, and brilliant. I somewhat suspect that every scene was just made up as they went along, but it doesn't seem obvious or boring. Its almost like a caterwaul into weirdness, moreso than any other Lynch film which is hard to believe but it is. I really liked every minute of this film and I'll probably buy it this weekend.
I watched it with a friend and every scene was an LOLfest. The humor is very bleak/disturbing/black and a lot of people probably can't stomach it without being familiar with Lynch and his other films in this similar Americana-style. It doesn't try to make coherent statements on morality like Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive, or try to scare the shit out of you like Lost Highway instead its just incredibly bizzare. Things happen for no reason but when you step back and look at his style you realize that they make perfect sense. So: David Lynch is a genius.
I've got Straight Story queued up on my Netflix account, but I heard its the tamest (and most heartfelt) of all his films.

David Lynch is GOD
And Straight Story is a moving story and I'd never say it's tame. I'd even say it's revolutionary! Saying that this movie is tame is standing in its surface, IMO. I'm sure you'll enjoy it as almost all of Lynch's movies (I can defend any Lynch movie but Dune)

David Lynch was chosen to direct Return of the Jedi, but he opted out

Lucas choose directors for Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi because he's a lazy guy and didn't want to confront all the amount of job that he had to making Star Wars. And he wanted a director who did anything he ordered. I'm sure that Lynch refused that conditions and went away from Lucas...

I really need to see Wild at Heart, as well as the other couple of Lynch movies I haven't seen. He definitely makes some mind blowing stuff, Mullholland Drive and Lost Highway are maybe the best mind fuck movies ever made.
