My friends and I have had a board since August 2000. The expense is minimal. We used to all chip in about $50 a year to keep it up, but our traffic is so low and the internet so fast now that I haven't been asked to contribute for years. I bet it only costs about $100-$200 a year to serve it.
The key is to have someone who is pretty technical to admin the board.

A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Washing Machine. And he left them, and departed. They then knew in their hearts that Technical Support would not recover.
