I got my EV Uke LP today in the mail, and it kinda pissed me off. This isn't the first time I've received a record in the mail from the 10c in this fashion. But for a band that is so environmentally conscious and environmetally vocal, how can their fan club ship records with a completely useless plastic bag wrapped around the cardboard?? I've received hundreds of records in the mail, and 10c are the only ones I've had do this (i'm sure they're not the only in the world). Hundreds of records from both stores and record labels, and the cardboard box is by far sufficient enough to ship the record. Never had an issue.
Let's not get into arguments about "10c is its own entity" or whatever. Fact is, they still represent Pearl Jam, whether they're an active part of the organization or not. "Ten Club" is still listed in the credits of Pearl Jam albums. And they're damaging their reputation for being a band that practices hard in its environmentality. And really, in the grand scheme of things, who cares about a bands reputation.... they're needlessly damaging the earth and its resources by using these bags. Seriously, no reason at all for these things.
A lot of you might be thinking "who cares" or "big deal", but it's an issue that I'm personally passionate about, so I thought I'd voice it here. Is there something we – as supporters of PJ, as well as conscious citizens – can do to raise this issue to either 10c or the band itself? I'm not a member of the Pit, but if someone wants to copy and paste this over there, feel free. Maybe we can just bombard the 10c or something.

I, for one, am outraged by this. You claim that this important to you yet you continue to purchase albums from a band that you know deliver their items in this manner. Outrageous.

seriously?
first of all, the cardboard probably doesn't protect the contents from liquid. if your mailman left your vinyl in the rain, I bet you'd appreciate the plastic covering.
second, I appreciate your environmental conscience, but can't you just put the plastic in the recycle bin?

My town only recycles #2 and #5 plastic, and I have to drive it to the recycling drop-off center.

Not to mention those hundreds of records you've purchased come in a sleeve which is then boxed up in cardboard. If you'd gone to the record store, you could've just purchased that item in it's original sleeve without the cardboard. Shame on you.

Not only that, if downloaded your music from the internet, you wouldn't need to go to the store to purchase those albums thus not contributing toxic fumes from driving your car there AND not wasting the cardboard used in the original packaging, the cardboard used to box up the album and it's original packaging and the material used in the pressing of the album itself.

But you're right, it's the band's fault and you should probably post on the internet about it rather than, I don't know, writing them an email and raising the issue with the organisation responsible or making an alternative choice as a consumer. Clearly Pearl Jam held a gun to your head and said you must purchase all vinyl copies of our releases and you must help us in our evil mission to needlessly pollute the world while we purport to be environmentally conscious, or else!

And whatever you do, don't let not being a member of the Pit stop you in your fight to bombard the 10C. I mean, it's pretty hard to get an account over there but seeing as you're so passionate about environmental issues, I know you won't let that hold you back from bringing this to the attention of as many PJ fans as possible.

beef did a good job in this thread, but I prefer the elegant simplicity of Chud's response just a little bit more.

do you think they got a discount on bulk plastic bags as part of their record deal with Target?

By choosing not to tour they keep all those carbon credits for themselves!
Don't delude yourself Stip - a lot of bands are environmentally conscious. Pearl Jam try as many do and we all know they care, but if they really really cared they would work a lot harder at it.

i think they need to slow down a bit too. They've been polluting way too fast on recent tours.

it's weird too, since Matt polluted much less in Soundgarden
