We are a bunch of post-modern globalized pricks, but in this date, eve of Saint John's Festival, a huge thing here where I live, I can't avoid the desire of listening and dance to the local/folk songs, eat the traditional corn stuff and watch the firewood burning thru the night. And right now I'm alone at home with the fuck internet, and it's fuck depressing. At least I will travel tomorrow and enjoy a good time with Flávia.

But the point is, many times we are snobs towards our local culture, specially since we aware of the vices and hypocrisy, but then there are times we actually have the feeling of belonging, of enjoying something local in a level that an outsider couldn't.

Just rambling.

Well, the portuguese loved their saints, and June is the month of some big ones like Saint John, Saint Peter and some other, and here in the brazilian Northeast, the portuguese influence was huge. It' also the start of winter here, so there is this cozy feeling (it's not really cold, but with some attitude the weather gets cool) and the old pagan tradition of lighting a pile of wood after the harvest survived with a christian excuse. The fire theme is also seen with all the fireworks and little bombs, when I was a kid, I loved to get a cart of fireworks.

There is the music, the forró whose main instrument is the accordion and it's fun to dance with a girl. And, of course, there is the food, mostly corn based. So all the food, weather, music, smell of powder and fire creats a very sensorial experience.

An example of forró, the video is shitty, but the song is a classic of the genre.

Saint-John the Baptist is Quebec's patron saint and june 24th is our national day. this year, however, even if the band i'm in played for the occasion, i had the feeling that, maybe because of the shitty political climate, the general belonging feeling was more local than national, with a big emphasis on the vernacular stories and legends which isn't a bad thing in itself. it was just weird compared to years before.
