Somebody recommend me a good book on movie symbolism and it's interpretation. Or is it something that you either get or you don't, and can't study?

It can be studied. Read a lot about history and culture and how themes develop between the two for a story and you've got a good chunk of the "how to figure it out."

Michael Bay movies might be the exception to this.

Well, there seems to be lots of symbolism in the American movies from the 70's that I've watched. Is that too broad?
