well in the nineties no doubt distorted guitars were the most common defining thing of the music. lately a lot of bands bon iver, fleet foxes, grizzly bear, bright eyes and many others are using reverb to get a bigger fuller sound. on vocals and drums most of the time. but bands are starting to overuse it just like distortion became meaningless towards the end of the 90's. i think this is the beginning of the reverb phase.

Yeah, I actually think I agree with you on this, to some extent at least. I would extend it to guitars as well though. This is the most prominent in indie rock I think, don't really hear it anywhere else.

Actually, modern post-rock has gone even farther with reverb. If you listen to post-rock from the 90s, hardly any reverb was used. Mono and Mogwai, and of course EITS, really popularized that reverby sound, then tonnnnnns of bands started using it, basically redefining post-rock as a different entity post-2003 or so. It seems like there is actually a backswing now where people are shying away from it a bit.
Reverb is great when used properly but like anything else, too much is too much.

yeah it happens on every instrument, but i think its a most prominent trend on drums on vocals. i mean rarely is an instrument recorded/mixed without reverb. i agree with the indie rock statement, but i say give it time. cause at the moment i know its refreshing to hear dark reverb again, after lots of overly compressed distorted guitars and rick rubin mixes, but i suspect reverb is coming back on a bigger scale soon.
yeah you are right on with the post rock.

Simply not.
The same.
Actually, the big trend right now is for engineers to use delay to create a reverb-like effect. Done right, it can create a far more realistic 'verb than typical reverb equipment/plugs, if done right.

for me delay always seemed like a better way to make things sound 'bigger' and can be hidden in the mix better. reverb, much like auto-tune, can be overdone quickly and screw/muddy shit up. natural reverb is a good alternative, like say if you have a big ol tracking room. obviously not everyone does though, unless you're in a band with a reasonable budget. room sounds in general should be one's 1st option if they have that. just more natural and organic to me. reverb is a great way to add more dimension and space to your mix, just don't overdo it. just let the music dictate what needs to be added. mmj's older material, for instance, lends itself to the verb many times.
