Hey guys, some of you are familiar with my job and how I've felt about it over the years. I've been there about 3.5 years now and it's a good position and looks good on paper.

Pretty much my worst fears have happened as the other guy at the company walked out and our recent hire isn't working out so she'll
likely either quit or be fired. This is basically leaving me and my boss to work on all of the work, which was honestly too much before
all this happened and basically means I'll be doing most of the heavy lifting for my boss. It's the work of 4 people and I'll end up doing
most of it over the next few weeks.

I've been thinking about quitting, I haven't been happy here in years, but the next two weeks are sooo busy and I'd actually feel really bad about quitting even though my boss brought it upon herself by abusing employees. I'm waiting to hear back from another company I met with but they're on hold for a few weeks. My boss will give me a ton of shit when I quit, like flip out on me.

Here are my options:

Walk out-just leave and don't deal with it. It's an at will agreement. My boss doesn't give references so I'm not sure how much this would actually hurt me. best case scenario is the other company hires me in the next 3 weeks. Like I said, I'd feel bad about leaving. However, I'm worried about the difficulty getting a job while unemployed and being without a job for long. My wife is looking for a job as well.

Quit and give 2 weeks notice-try not to be the bad guy, help out during the busy time, help hire someone, train them a bit.

Quit and give 4 weeks notice-to help out but also with the agreement that I can go interview. This would buy me some time as I'd be paid while looking.

Stick it out with intention of leaving-job market seems like it really sucks right now, I'm paid pretty well paid, and my wife isn't working right now. Problem is I have to work so much, 70 hour weeks at least, that I have no time to interview. Then if other company makes me an offer I would leave. Also, I've been trying to leave for a long time and it never ends up having.

Quitting a well-paid position in this environment without having something else lined up would be foolish.

I don't have any easy answers, man. If you can pick up a few part-time gigs to make ends meet in the interim, it might be worth it. Do you have much debt?

job wise most of the time you are at the end of your rope you find the rope is actually a bungy cord.


never let the fact that your boss is a jerk turn you into a jerk also. i feel comfortable in putting my ex-boss up against yours and i still managed to put two weeks in (actually 13 days). be the better person and stick it out. if opportunity comes from the other company take it, tell them you are in a at-will work agreement and if they need you to start asap you will, but that you would like to give the customary 2 week notice. most if not all companies would expect the same.

the fact your wife is also looking for work makes quitting now very foolish, as docks said. this would open her up the indecent proposal i am sure mickey is waiting to spring on her

There are about 14 million people who would love to have a terrible boss and a job they hate. Things can always be worse. It's all a matter of perspective.

Remind your boss that you're all she has. Tell her you are taking 2 weeks off to start september, Paid.
Give her a reasonable salary increase demand, and make her write an undated letter of recommendation regarding your work performance.

then tell her that you are going to get her through the busy time, and if things get better and she hires someone else to help with the workload, that you will gladly come back from your two week vacation.

I find the reference thing to be pretty hilarious. Pretty much all jobs require you to have professional references... but most major companies don't allow your supervisors to ever be references (on the record at least)

its hard to describe the situation to people because most people in their ordinary lives don't deal with someone this psychotic.

Tell her she's nuts and she'll never keep a consistent workforce (yourself included) unless something changes.

one of the problems is that i don't even know if i can do my job without junior level support and they're all gone or going. i'm going to end up having to train people from scratch and that's almost impossible with my work load, but i need the support to do my workload. its catch-22

Do you need me to take a week vacation and come get you all caught up again?

Do you know anyone that needs a job and would be trainable under your watch? Might help make the working situation easier for you if you bring in a friend.

if you can tread water for 6 months on savings without credit then take a leap. if this person is illogical i dont know how much leverage you really have.

do you get orders and ship them out?

i really dont want to deplete savings, but i think i would be okay for at least 3-4 months.

now the intern quit so more and more is falling back on me
