"Soul food" and "Southern food" are basically analogous, depending on who you talk to. I think "soul food" came about with the Great Migration, because the people involved were no longer technically southern but brought the food of that region with them to places like NY and Detroit. But it's the same stuff--fried chicken, black eyed peas, cornbread, and all that.
