Inasmuch as Achtung Baby is a better record than Ten, I'd probably expect to enjoy this more than the PJ doc. But since Pearl Jam is otherwise a much better band, it probably won't turn out that way.

Beyond excited for this. Achtung is easily my favorite thing this band has ever done. I've always loved the transition they made from 80s U2 to this new "Let's give them a rock star" Zoo TV beast they created. This thing had me at, "Edge, would you shut the fuck up!"

Achtung Baby and Zooropa. 10,000 stars.

When Achtung Baby came out the biggest band in the world also happened to be the best band in the world. That's not likely to ever happen again.

Watching this at the moment. It's incredible. Even if you're not a U2 fan it's enjoyable. A band nearly breaking up and having nothing come to them into a moments inspiration saving them and a whole record coming from it. It's not a band history, just focuses on that transitional period into Achtung Baby and Zoo tv. It's excellent. Heartily recommend it.

No it was on BBC northern ireland here this weekend. Same move pj are making with their film.

This film is what some pj fans wanted pj20 to be. An in-depth analysis of the trials troubles and rewards of making an album. It's 'out there' online I'm sure if you looked.

saw this yesterday....it was ok...im a big fan of atchung baby, i think its their best record, and one of the top 10 albums of the 90...and i was kind of dissapointed on this one....

saw this on showtime tonight. first, let me say, i'm not a u2 fan. i saw them on the pop mart tour over a decade ago because the girl i was dating loved them. that show did not convert me. i'm not saying this documentary has, but i now have the utmost respect for bono. the mysterious ways/one songwriting process is one of the most fascinating things i've ever seen. the only disappointment for me was that it was only 90 minutes. i wish single video theory was more like this.

I loved that moment when they have him on camera, playing him a demo, and you know cos youvebeen told it's Mysterious Ways, but he doesn't and suddenly his head turns and he's like 'is that?....' that was funny. He definitely comes across better n this than in anything I've ever seen him interview wise.

Speaking as someone who is not a U2 fan, I was very impressed with the first two thirds of this movie. The honesty of the band in their feelings towards the perceived failure of Rattle and Hum, the frustrations of their experience in Berlin, the bit about Edge's failed marriage and how that was informing his songwriting, the Mysterious Ways/One writing process. This is the kind of warts-and-all documentary that PJ20 was not.

The last third (everything after the conception of the Fly character) felt very rushed and thrown together. They seem to arrive at a certain space where everything gels together, but they don't explore what they do once they reach that creative space. It just jumps straight to the promo/tour. It should've been longer.

All in all, pretty entertaining documentary.

this one was about one record, about one moment of the career of the band, it wasnt about 20 years.
I didnt quite like it because i was expecting more of the creative process of the record, not just about 2 songs, i wanted to learn more about the whole record.

I kind of thought this was rather boring. Maybe its because Achtung Baby isn't one of my favorite albums or that I only like U2 and don't love them like other fans. But aside from them listening to some of those DAT tapes and seeing Mysterious Ways give birth to One, I didn't find this that spellbinding, and I generally really love rock documentaries that pull back the curtains on the creative and recording processes.

did this not do that? in spades? i thought it did.

I'll watch it again in the next week, but on first impression I wasn't blown away. The last time I saw the Edge in a documentary of sorts it was in It Might Get Loud and I thought that was much more entertaining that this.

I never got to see that, must look it up.

Guess I was more impressed by the honesty with which they spoke about how close they came to breaking up and none of their usual methods being any use to them as they had abandoned them for a new approach and new sound. It got as into it and in such an open way, that you had to respect them for it, even if you're not a fan.

I'd watch it again.
