People don't say it as publicly as they did a decade ago, but there are still a lot of people, especially South Boston Irish Catholics, who think of this guy as a folk hero. He used to give thousands of dollars to parish priests and told them stuff like "make sure every family has a turkey on the table and every kid has a gift under the tree this Christmas". He had a "good guy" persona with the drug dealing because, despite making a shit ton of money off the cocaine trade he strictly forbade heroin from being sold on in that part of Boston. But let's not forget, if you crossed him he'd duct tape you to a chair, torture you for 8 hours, put a bullet in your head, and bury you under the Southeast Expressway.
If I am a poor family in Boston, and this guy put food on my table and toys under my Xmas tree, I'm gonna be a big fan, too...
It's all in the perspective.
But what if he did that but also killed your uncle because he stood up to a shake down at his local business?

BOSTON (AP) - A provisional lawyer for James "Whitey" Bulger has accused federal prosecutors in Boston of manipulating the judicial process.
The government is attempting to dismiss one of the indictments against reputed mob boss so they can focus on a later indictment that includes charges that he participated in 19 murders.
Attorney Peter Krupp asks in a motion filed Wednesday that both indictments against Bulger be consolidated.
The former leader of the notorious Winter Hill Gang was captured in Santa Monica, Calif., last week after 16 years on the run.
Prosecutors want to dismiss a 1994 racketeering indictment and focus solely on the 1999 charges.
Krupp said in court documents that the government is attempting "forum shopping" to manipulate the usual process of randomly assigning judges to cases.

Welp, the 1995 racketeering indictment is out.
Quote:
BOSTON (AP) - A federal judge in Boston has granted a bid by prosecutors to dismiss a 1994 racketeering indictment against former mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger so they can focus on a later indictment charging him with participating in 19 murders. Judge Mark Wolf ruled Thursday that prosecutors were within their rights to dismiss the case. He rejected a claim by Bulger's lawyer that prosecutors were "judge shopping." Bulger has another hearing ahead of him. He is also asking for a taxpayer-funded attorney. He was arrested in Santa Monica, Calif., last week after 16 years as a fugitive.
Whitey wanted to not only be charged with that indictment but have it consolidated with the later murder one in an attempt to bog down the process. Prosecutors wanted to dismiss the 95 indictment and focus on the 99 murder indictment for two reasons: First, the 95 indictment has gone stale and witnesses are now dead. And second, the judge attached to that indictment is known as being very scrupulous to prosecutors. So this ruling is a pretty big win for the prosecution.

If my uncle stood up to the biggest mobster in Boston, my uncle is a fucking idiot. Darwinism, bro.

FBI: $2.1M Bulger reward paid to tipsters By Associated Press
The FBI says it has paid a $2.1 million reward to tipsters for information leading to the arrest of fugitive Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger (BUHL'-jur) and his longtime girlfriend.
Bulger was captured in June in Santa Monica, Calif., where he'd been living with Catherine Greig (grehg). Bulger, a longtime FBI informant, was wanted in connection with 19 murders.
The FBI had offered $2 million for information leading to Bulger's arrest of Bulger and $100,000 for information leading to Greig's arrest.
