This is a very great band that went unmentionned for too long and despite what you may think, yes, it's for everyone :)

Of course, they're an über-top-notch bunch of musicians/composers. I don't mean i get it all but there's a intrinsinct simplicity in all of their songs. I've read that many of their songs are built around only one melodic sequence twisted to shreds (IMO:) so that it makes them not so different from Radiohead (best example i could find) in more than one aspect.

i'm partial to their 2nd (Acquiring the Taste with this hilarious disclaimer:
Spoiler: show
"Acquiring the taste is the second phase of sensory pleasure. If you've gorged yourself on our first album, then relish the finer flavours (we hope) of this, our second offering. It is our goal to expand the frontiers of contemporary music at the risk of being very unpopular. We have recorded each composition with the one thought - that it should be unique, adventurous, and fascinating. It has taken every shred of our combined musical and technical knowledge to achieve this. From the outset we have abandoned all preconceived thoughts on blatant commercialism. Instead we hope to give you something far more substantial and fulfilling. All you need to do is sit back, and acquire the taste."
, 3rd (Three Friends) and their fourth (Octopus) albums.

anyone? i'm sorely disappointed that RM'ers are more inclined to post in a third rate spinoff thread like "RM'ers that slay penises" than on this one :(

I listened to that first one you posted and enjoyed it. I need more time to listen further.

The music is really cool, but I could take or leave the singer.

Gentle Giant has a special place in my heart. I've never actually sought out the music, but a former Rice University radio station (RIP 91.7 ktru :( ) played them a lot the first year I moved to Houston. Gentle Giant, to me, has sort of always represented college radio and everything it stood for.

Ok the singer's voice is definitely growing on me, and does tend to suit the overall feel of the piece.

Yeah it's the voice I could take or leave, but the delivery works really well with the music.

Oh man. I've had to open RM in a new tab to post this because I have School Days playing in the header post over in my first tab and I really dig it.

Holy shit you're right. I'm getting a beta band vibe from this music. Would you say that this song is representative of their sound?

I like School Days a lot more than the other two. I'm not sure I'd enjoy an entire album, to be honest. I probably would have a few years ago, though.

EDIT: When the guitar solo kicks in on that third clip, I started nodding my head. I could probably grow to like this a lot. It's like this music just sort of warms up to you just when you start to lose interest.

it's one of their most enduring work for sure, i don't know if it really mirrors the band's sound but the structure itself is a lot like their other great/early tunes. i thought for years that the mad ostinato during the chorus ("schooldays together, why do they change...") was played on bass but it actually looks like it's a guitar. there's a GG cover band on youtube that does a pretty great job at this song.
one thing i love about this band is the drummer's approach; he could bang away like Animal from the Muppets but he instead chooses to keep a relatively steady beat that makes this deeply complex music feel more down to earth. not to say his playing isn't subtle (it really is) but idk, it makes you stomp your feet.

I have a very weird relationship with drumming. I never notice it unless someone else draws my attention to it, like you just did, but I also don't know of any of my favorites that don't contain great drumming.

Inspired by this thread, I downloaded Octopus yesterday, masta. I haven't had a chance to listen yet, however.
