I didn't become a die-hard until around 2001 (Ed & Mike's performance at the 9/11 telethon sucked me in big time) so I have a question about something from before my major PJ fandom kicked in: why did they open for the Rolling Stones in '97? Now I understand that the Stones are rock legends, etc, etc. but still it just seems a little strange for some reason. I can't explain it. I understand the Stones are HUGE but I just can't picture PJ opening for anyone (yes, even the Stones) & it seems like they'd hate playing in a stadium of that size. Does anyone know how this came about? I know they were nervous about mounting a major tour after the debacle that was the anti-Ticketmaster tour - so were these warm up shows for the Yield tour? And finally was this something that kinda surprised PJ fans or no? I've never read much about this & was just curious.

It's because the Stones are rock legends, end of story.

The Smashing Pumpkins and Dave Matthews Band also opened for the Stones on that tour, IIRC.

Plus, Ed wanted a chance to kiss Mick and hug Keith (freaking Keith out!)

They often enough played before large audiences and they loved it.

It's Mike's idea of heaven. Ed or Stone telling him no would've just resulted in Mike smashing a guitar over their heads.

If the Stones asked you to open for them what would you say?

The Stones fan base is so loyal that even if God opened for them, people would yawn and chant "We want The Stones!"

they "warmed up" for the stones gigs at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, so I don't think the stones shows were "warm ups" for anything. Pearl Jam is a band that has a lot of respect for the legends of rock...as well, they have a lot of respect for their own opening bands...in short, PJ repsects good music...they're not full of themselves and what they can do...no surprises here. Now, if they opened for ashlee simpson...that would turn my head...

Not audiences of that size (unless they're festivals) Weren't these stadiums shows? Maybe it's just me but I think there's a big difference between stadium & arena/ampitheater shows.

I only asked b/c I was reading the synopsis on 5h & they refered to it as an "unusual four show series". I just wondered if it was a bit of a surprise to their fans when this was announced.

cause the stones are one of mike's fav bands. and when you conisder yourself "too big" to open for any1... then you are way out of line. there is always some1 bigger and it's a respect thing. i mean... the chilli peppers opened for pj in 2000 in seattle... basically if one band won;t open for the other then we could never have a legendary show of 2 bands...

As Hinny said, it's a Mike thing. they're his favourite band. Like us with PJ..

2 reasons, in my opionion:
Because The Stones are legends.
To warm up for the Yield tour.

Why have the Red Hot opened in the Seattle shows in 2000??

Maybe the same reason PJ opened for RS. Because they are friends? they respect each other? They were in need of a warm up shows?
