As sheltered an adolescence as I lived, it's actually a minor miracle that this album made it into my CD collection so early. I can remember countless times that Possum Kingdom would come on the radio while riding with my mom or my dad. I would almost sweat with anticipation if there was no conversation happening in the car as the climax of the song ("DO YOU WANNA DIE?") was approaching. I'd think of anything to bring up that would get my parents talking so that they wouldn't notice that part of the song. Funny how the rest of the song is immensely more disturbing, but hey, I was thirteen years old or so.

Anyway, I'm listening to this album right now and it's taking me back. There's actually some very good guitar on here.

We had such similar childhoods.

I had such a pathetic CD collection that Nirvana and The Pixies sounded like Toadies to me and not vice-versa.

tyler is the best song on that disc. great cd though, the opening track is awesome

I've always been a big fan of what happens to those guitars at the end of Away, too. Tyler is probably the high point of this band's career, though.

Me and my friend Dylan were tripping on mushrooms like 4 or 5 years ago and got into an argument with this chick who said "talk about a one hit wonder" upon hearing Possum Kingdom.

Away just came on. It's a really good song.

I still think about this cd once a year or so.

I'm getting a real kick out of thinking about the time that me and two other incompetent bozos teamed up with Eric Lopez, the best guitar player at Henderson Middle School, to try and perform this song live at a CYO talent show. I would like to say that we wanted to play it in order to subvert something, but we were all just idiots.

I Burn just ended. Out of reflex, I almost just reached for my Doc Martens cd wallet for Frogstomp to play next.

Possum Kingdom was the first one that I was aware of, but ICFTW sounds like the logical first single from the album.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's right, because I first learned of the Toadies from that song being on the radio, which was before I had ever heard Possum Kingdom.

Toadies had other singles, but I'm pretty sure "Possum Kingdom" would still qualify as a one-hit wonder. Most people who grew up in the '90's would remember it, the others less so.

It's a good album, though--I used to listen to it all the time. I should track down a cheap used copy.

I had "car versions" of a lot of cassettes when I was 12 or 13, dubbed versions that carefully omitted the songs with excessive cursing. My parents never cared about the cursing though--they were more scared of the message. My dad had a few days worth of panic over the Alice in Chains lyric, "If I can't be my own/I'd feel better dead."

The same with me (the message, not the cursing). While we were all connecting with this music, our parents were likely reading that Time Magazine cover with Eddie Vedder and watching Andy Rooney. My mom had the added burden of being a middle school teacher and being impacted by a handful of student suicides over the years. This music scared her to death.
