Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall Ian Brown saying they were a crap live band the first time. Apparently that gig they did on that island back in the day was pretty woeful. I'm happy for Stone Roses fans though-this is big news for them!

They're a good live band but Brown cannot sing live at all. They have autotune now so maybe he'll improve through the miracle of technology. But this is a whole load of overrated waiting to happen.

they'll be shit live but I'll be there, it'll be an epic atmosphere, if not a little messy! Saw Oasis at the venue they're having their first shows at the other year, brilliant place.
I'm holding out for the Inspiral Carpets to be added to the line up, they've just reformed as well, surely can't be coincidence given Clint Boon and Mani's friendship...

In terms of other bands electing influences in the UK over the past 20 years, none carry the sheer power of the Stone Roses. It's probably because in the UK the Stone Roses were the equivalent of Nirvana - they bought Indie rock and Alternative to the mainstream in the late 80s. They are extremely comparable to Oasis in terms of influence and popularity - however, they remain a little more leftfield as a choice because their music wasn't necessarily accepted in the same way Oasis was incorporated into the mainstream (with no. 1 singles and albums etc.). That's part of the compelling reason as to why we didn't really necessarily allow the Alternative rock explosion of the early 90s to engulf things here so much as they did on other shores.
Most of the bands I liked over the past 15 years that were British would cite the Stone Roses as a key influence (making it a cliche to me) but their first album is fantastic. That's despite them touring and milking it for roughly 4 years before trying to deliver a follow up. The Noel Gallagher thread mentions 'Be Here Now' and the perception of the ambitious failure album and the same somewhat applies to 'Second Coming' because it has the same pitfals - it's great music but it is too self indulgent and the tracks are too long to be commercially viable. 'Second Coming' is often panned but I like it. The record everyone neglects to mention is 'Turns Into Stone' which was a collection of offcuts and EP versions of tracks that came out between the two proper albums, and contains 12" recordings of two of the biggest singles the band released, "One Love" and "Fools Gold", the latter the band's most famous track.
It's somewhat ironic that the band has reuinited as it was often claimed that 'hell would freeze over' before any of the band accepted a reunion is in the offing but obviously this is a financial thing. I am becoming more sceptical of bands splitting with animosity these days as it seems increasingly frequent to aid an unlikely and nostalgic reunion whene everyone kisses and makes up, like The Verve did. Many smaller Britpop bands that others across the Atlantic haven't heard before are currently or recently reformed as those who were in their key demographic before approach their mid-life crisis age and are confortable with their disposable incomes.
But I do welcome this, after all, I was too young to see them when I was younger and no one can blame them for doing soming which aids their own affluence.

Really the Stone Roses were the equivalent of the Pixies with Oasis and Nirvana being the logical progression that ended up being super popular. It's like Little Richard is technically more influential but Elvis made it huge.
