I remember hearing What It's Like and being pretty impressed when it came out. My high school ears had never heard a blend of folk/blues and hip-hop apart from Beck. Nowadays that song is meh to me, but the memories are there.

I saw him live in 2001 at a radio station festival and enjoyed his performance.

Yeah, that's how I feel. He's not great, but something about his words and music that just makes it a great listen for me. You just don't hear this kind of stuff anywhere else.
