This is following the 128 entry tournament model you can find on bracketmaker, but we cannot use that site since the entries are too long. The overall tournament is found in the second and third posts. The current matchups are found in the first post.
you can decide whether you would like to consider each lyric as poetry (and judge it only as a written line) or as a 'lyric', which would also account for the way the line is delivered.
All that's sacred comes from youth/Dedications naive and true is Pearl Jam's best lyric
Finals Voting open 1/9-1/16
127. I wish I was the verb 'to trust' and never let you down vs. All that's sacred comes from youth/Dedications naive and true
13-10

Bracket A
1. Under your tongue/I'm like a tab/I will give you what you're not supposed to have vs. Anxious is the present/Unwrap your gifts, take your time
I think the second lyric is probably more clever, and is going somewhere more interesting, but never quite makes it. And the line itself is kinda chunky. The melody underneath the words matters a bit for effective songwriting.
2. I've got scratches all over my arms/One for each day since I fell apart vs. Escape is never the safest path
The footsteps lyric is delivered really well but in the end it IS a pretty emo lyric. The escape is never the safest path is the kind of lyric writing that Eddie does really really well, a deceptively simple line in pretty unaffected language that manages to say something pretty profound.
3.Are you getting something out of this all-encompassing trip? vs. A night bird is following you all the time.
I've never thought the PT lyrics were that great (the only part I really like is the chorus), and I've been thinking a lot about this lyric only because I respect KD and he nominated, and if I squint at it the right way I can start to see why it's pretty good.
4. Life has nothing to do with killing time vs. Eyes, no eyes, there's no difference/Every life is looking in
Cropduster is one of the better written songs in the catalog, but it is kind of like Tremor Christ or Immortality. The overall effect is better than the sum of its parts. The lyric from All Night (good call, whoever nominated that one) is like the dissident lyric--the kind of stuff Eddie does really well.
5. Sometimes is seen a strange spot in the sky/a human being that was given to fly vs. It's like she's lost her invitation to the party on earth/And she's standing outside hating everyone here
I always liked the punchiness in the breakerfall lyric, but even with the slightly awkward phrasing (which gets hidden nicely in the melody) the culminating lyric to GTF is pretty powerful. The phrase 'given to fly' is wonderful.
6. Not unlike a friend that politely drags you down. vs. I let go of a rope, thinking that's what held me back/now in time I've realized, it's now wrapped around my neck
Credit where credit is due, the lyrics to the pilate chorus are pretty good. I like the lyrics to TMY, but this one is almost too obvious.
7. Sometimes I burn like a dot on the sun vs. Standing like a statue/A chin of stone, a heart of clay
You Are has one good lyric, and the above is not it.
8. I smile but who am I kidding? vs. I'm a lucky man to count on both hands the ones I love
I like how resigned the TMY lyric is but I think the Just Breathe lyric, both in the melody, the expression of sentiment, and the innocent way in which it is written, is one of the best lyrics in the catalog. This is eddie at his best.
Bracket B
9. It's egg rolling thick and heavy/All this past we carry. vs. Now you got both sides claiming killing in God's name/But God is nowhere to be found, conveniently.
The marker lyric is a bit too obvious.
10. Mondays were made to fall, lost on a road he knew by heart/It was like a book he read in his sleep, endlessly vs. I guess it was the beatings/ made me wise/but I am not about to give thanks, or apologize
That's a good SoH lyric but the second half of the RVM lyric is what takes it
11. Don't see some men as half empty/see 'em half fulla shit vs. Just be darling, and I will be too/Faithful to you
I'm sure the faithful lyric will win. Neither of these are great, but I kinda like the shoulder shrugging fuck em all feel to the 1/2 full lyric.
12. And wherever you've gone/and wherever we might go/It don't seem fair/you seemed to like it here vs. I was the fool because I thought I thought the world/Turns out the world thought me
Light years has too many lines of clunky sentiment. That cropduster lyric is VERY smart. Much smarter than people may realize.
13. I wish I was the verb 'to trust' and never let you down vs. Like a cloud dropping rain I'm discarding all thought/I'll dry up, leaving puddles on the ground.
The wishlist lyric, for all its clunkiness, is one of my all time favorites, since he takes this sweet, sentimental love song and reduces the whole thing to trust, hope, and fear, which is very smart.
14. Tried to endure/what i could not forgive vs. Everything has chains/Absolutely nothing’s changed
Two great lyrics, two fantastic deliveries, RVM's is a bit more effective outside the context of its song, but with that context the exacerbated, pleading elements to Corduroy take it.
15. she holds the hand that holds her down/she will rise above vs. Looks like lightning in my child's eyes.
Nice sentiment in Army Reserve (I would have liked to see a few more lyrics from that one make it) but the daughter lyric has that moment of the catharsis and the understated but still quite chilly, almost frightningly awful first half. She holds the hand that holds her down is excellent writing.
16. There was a solemn man, watched his twilight disappear/Altered by a fallen eagle, a warning sign /He sensed worry could be strength/With a plan that said, "Time for--evacuation." vs. We were but stones/your light made us stars
Evacuation's chorus has never really impressed me. The above Light Years lyric is one of the few places where that song's lyrics work.
