A half hour interview with the Rob.
The Highlights:
- Recent shows have been lots of fun with crazy crowds, but they haven't been that political out of respect to the countries they've played, although Eddie's been reading everything he can about Occupy Wall Street. - Eddie's spent some of his time recording in his room when not surfing. - A crew member went to the hotel he'd stayed in the last time PJ was in South America and was able to find the drugs he'd hidden 6 years ago. - Of The Earth might never be properly recorded and included on an album, only left to live performances. - Because their lives are busier with other obligations, songwriting has to be done a little faster or they just have to find ways to produce things in shorter time frames. Backspacer was recorded quickly and they were happy with it, but he acknowledged that quick records might eventually suffer from poor quality. - Seeing the West Memphis 3 walk free was one of the most powerful moments of his life. - Due to the elevation, they joke around about including Thin Air and Just Breathe in the sets. Eddie mentions Thin Air should've been a single with a video, but that Stone doesn't care for it anymore.

Great interview. it´s nice to see ed talking about of the earth, because its really a good song, even if it feels somewhat unfinished. im not expecting to hear a studio version , specially after they have included in the pj20 deluxe dvd. Other great stuff is ti hear him speak about the recording and writing process for this record, being so different from the previous one.
nice to see he knows what going on in chile, and even greater is the thought about not adressing the crowd about it.

Yea the one depressing thing about this interview is eddie saying something like "never thought we would be considered a party band"
Hmm. I mean yes and no. Dont buy into it too much please.
he´s joking....they are surprised to see the reaction of the crowds in south america, that´s all. gotta say , it seems it was underwhelming for the band...i hope thats translate into some rocking songs.

At least it seems like he knows the reason they don't make quality records anymore is because its not really a priority. It would be sad for me to think Ed felt Backspacer is truly the best the band can do.

The comment confirms for me that Pearl Jam is no longer a band but a vehicle for making money off nostalgia. Unless I am misunderstanding the interview I'd prefer that they shut up shop. If they can't be bothered setting aside enough time in a three year period to write and record good songs, I can't be bothered paying for it or listening to it. I never thought Pearl Jam would turn into a sham. I don't see that longevity is a positive thing if you are artistically bankrupt.

But see most bands end up this way. They break out, get huge, and then everything fades. Diehards stay with them for their entire career, but there's no way they're ever going to replicate early massive success. Whenever I think of longevity, I think of the Rolling Stones and how they're still around, but on the occasion they release new music its never remotely close to the best music of their back catalog. That's what Pearl Jam is to me today. Like the Stones, they tread on their brand and can bring in hardcore fans for new releases, but their best ideas have already been committed to tape and their glory days are long behind them.

These are both a bit cynical. I don't think for a minute anyone in this band is kicking back and not giving a fuck, quite the opposite. I'd imagine ed is all about developing and getting better as a studio band. That's what I took from it. I can't see him imposing his benevolent dictatorship thing again, much as we'd like him to and it'd be good for the music if the others allowed him to, but to be fair it's a band that haven't really ever repeated themselves and have tried new things, musically and seemingly in terms of recording processes.
All he was saying there was that the brevity of the process didn't work and they wouldn't be doing it again. Now whether or not that results in better songs, remains to be seen, but I'd give them the benefit of the doubt for now. least until we've heard it.

The problem with PJ is they're not even trying. Say what you want about U2, but at least they make an effort in the studio. I doubt U2 go in to record a new album saying: 'ok, we booked the studio for 2 months, so let's get on with it and get this shit over with.' That's the way I think PJ goes about recording a new album these days.

As far as the efficiency/family stuff goes I have some sympathy with that. After Ellie was born I had to either choose to drop some of the things in my life I cared about or learn how to do them more efficiently (not necessarily better or worse). That seems like a pretty reasonable response to those types of time pressures.
It would be interesting to track artistic investment (in terms of times) with the presence of family across some major artists.

Or you just don't like what they're doing in a studio and are looking for ways to rationalize it.
