I get the feeling that lo-fi music owes a debt to K Records. Some of my favorite Nirvana recordings were done live on Calvin Johnson's KAOS radio show, and of course there is the lo-fi gold that is Beck's One Foot In The Grave.

A small number of posts can be found on any of Calvin Johnson's various projects, but no definitive thread. Beat Happening seems to be the most popular avenue for CJ's music. I've only heard the song "Indian Summer", but plan to listen to all of Jamboree tonight.

There's a cd I picked up a few years ago in a used bin that gets a lot of play in my car and around my house, which is the eponymous debut by a drum and bass duo that call themselves C.O.C.O. It's really good. It was recorded by Calvin Johnson at his Dub Narcotic studio and released on K Records. I can't find any youtube clips of the music, but I may upload later in the week.

Quote:
Performed with only bass, drums, and vocals, each of the record's ten tracks is a pop gem -- quick, tight, simple. Nothing too fancy ever finds its way into the mix as C.O.C.O. delivers clever and upbeat pop music. Simplicity never sounded so good.

I have a soft spot for Beat Happening.

But my favorite K band of all time was easily KARP

Well Jamboree is everything I love about the music I love. It's detuned, understated, and unpretentious, yet adventurous and creative. It's the musical equivalent of a side street in your neighborhood after a rainstorm filled all of the potholes with rain.

"The This Many Boyfriends Club" could afford to have the vocals a little lower in the mix, though.

Beat Happening are one of my favorite bands--where does a guy start in KARP's discography?

Fair warning, they sound nothing like BH, much more Buzzo than Calvin.

I found a copy of the We Ate Sand 7" a few years ago and that's what did me in. I think that was from their Self Titled record. Their album Suplex is pretty good too.

There's a great documentary on the band that's just now making the theater rounds, try and watch a trailer or two.

K Records has never let me down in the used record or cd bin. It's probably seem obvious to someone that is serious enough about music to collect records, but guys, if you see that "K" shield logo, pick it up and don't ask questions.

'trings, do you suppose that Stephen Merritt is a Beat Happening fan?

Well, I suppose I'm not totally certain about Stephin, but I can confirm without doubt that Dean Wareham is a fan.
