Ok, you know those chats you sometimes have along the lines 'they are the modern day Rolling Stones'.
I've made a long list of classic acts and picked the more modern band that sound alike, or look alike or have made a similiar impact to music. Had some fun doing this, so join in . There's about fifty years of rockNroll music, so the splitting point is the mid eighties.
Neil Young & crazy Horse - Pearl Jam The Who - Artic Monkeys Lynyrd skynyrd - Kings Of Leon James Brown - Prince Big Star - REM Grand Funk Railroad - My Morning Jacket Motorhead - Queens of the Stone Age Hendrix Experience - Red Hot Chili Peppers (frusciante) Stooges - Nirvana Tim Buckley - Jeff Buckley Nick Drake - Elliot Smith New York Dolls - Strokes Roxy Music - Arcade Fire Talking Heads - Blur Clash - Fugazi Dire Straits - Coldplay Booker T Mgs - The Roots ACDC - Foo Fighters Tom Waits - Mark Lanegan The Band - Wilco Patti Smith - PJ Harvey Queen - Muse Television - Franz Ferdinand Captain Beefheart - Sonic Youth Pink Floyd - Radiohead Aerosmith - Stone Temple Pilots Genesis (peter gabriel) - Flaming Lips John Mayall - Jack White Abba - Roxette Madonna - Gaga/Spears/Rihanna Michael Jackson - Justin Timberlake King Crimson - Tool David Bowie - Beck MC5 - Mudhoney Elton John - Rufus Wainwright Rory Gallagher - Ben Harper Thin Lizzy - Metallica CSN - Fleet Foxes Led Zeppelin - Soundgarden Black Sabbath - Wolfmother Cream - Rage Against the Machine Blind Faith - Audioslave Rolling Stones - Black Crowes
Ok, some comparisons work better than others .

I always mentally connect bands from the eras to bands of past eras...when I hear something that I think reminds me of something. I think the Crowes are a much fairer comparison to the Faces (Rod Stewart era; cutting off the Crowes in the late-90s). And Tom Waits stuff pre-mid-80s is nothing like Lanegan if that is the rough cutoff line - Waits is in his prime during Lanegan's prime...AKA EPIC FAIL!!!! (on that one point)

haha, I already said some comparisons work better than others...
thought of some more:
Leonard Cohan - the National T Rex - Suede JJ Cale - Jack Johnson Velvet Underground - Dandy Warhols The Doors - the Tea Party Santana - Mars Volta Joni Mitchell - Feist Eric Clapton - John Mayer
. . . . . .
I challenge you to find worthy comparisons for: Springsteen, Dylan (not: Conor Oberst ), Beatles, Zappa, Bob Marley
