I'm considering picking up and moving to a new place for a year or two (with the girlfriend). I have a college degree, no real marketable skills, a fair amount of savings, and these qualifications about where I can go:
-within 4 hours of Albany, NY -able to get under $1000/month rent in our own 1br apt in a nice neighborhood -enough around to keep a young person occupied
The leading candidate right now seems to be Burlington, VT. Portland, ME is a little too far away, the Boston/NYC suburbs are too expensive, and most other nearby cities are pretty dumpy. Anyone have any ideas/tips for a re-locating person?

Well I know you said under 1000 but a good friend of mine just told me there's a really nice 2BR RR up for grabs in her building, recently reno'd, super clean, big bright spaces, nice neighborhood in Brooklyn, quiet neighbors, 1100/mo. Landlord looking for someone who'll stay for at least a year. Plus: lots of colorful people to be intimidated by, then passive-aggressively mock, then eventually grow to love.

Portland is great. I remember really liking it when I was there a few years ago. It's just too far from home. We want to be able to come home for a weekend without too much hassle. The ideal spot for us would probably be somewhere outside Boston where we can walk to the commuter train and bicycle to the beach. Or right downtown in a medium/small city with low crime and outdoorsy stuff within easy driving distance, like Burlington. I'm worried Burlington, VT might be a little too college-y, but I have to visit again.
and yeah, I'd personally love to try living in NY, but that's not an option for us as a couple right now.
