Guy is totally kickass. I'm about through Kitchen Confidential, and there is some truth to his weird, removed external shell. He really is a badass.
He just exudes cool to me. Between No Reservations, his moonlighting on the side for various publications, and his books, he's probably the guy I'd most want to bring along for some rabid ether frolic in Pamplona the night before we ran from the bulls. He just seems like the damn coolest traveler on earth. And imagine my surprise, going from Giada "Weekend Vacations" to Tony's "Kick you in the balls and serve you the puke" attitude. Plus, his quote about Rachel Ray's cooking puts him in my pantheon of favorite TV personalities automatically.
Anyway, let this space be where we expound on the ass-kicking greatness that is Tony Bourdain.

I agree, the guy is awesome. I need to make a point to DVR No Reservations so I can catch it more often. Ever watch Andrew Zimmern's show that comes on either right before or right after? I thought Tony ate some exotic foods on his travels, but Andrew takes the cake in that category.

My sister in law served him once back before he was real famous in 2001 i think. She said that they were giving each other a hard time all night and at one point she called him "Emerald" having no idea of his hate for him.

Bizarre Foods is decent now and then, but it is pretty boring if you watch No Reservations immediately before. Last night No Reservations was in Brazil, and I watched the entire episode, and then Bizarre Foods (Bolivia) came on immediately afterwards, and I nearly fell asleep. I did like his Southeast Asia one, and the Gulf Coast one.

Has anybody actually been to his Les Halles restaurant in NYC? Does he even still work there? If so, how's it stack up?
I see him being enormously talented but not matching up with the real heavy hitters in the biz. If you were compiling a list of the top 10 chefs in the world today (hell, maybe in the US today), I doubt Bourdain would be on many. He's just that badass, and his food, from what I've heard, has that "simple but amazing" quality to it. I got that sense from his book, too. Amazing food with little pretension.
I can say that I have little faith in his novels being much, though, aside from maybe a mildly entertaining romp read.

Next episode is my hometown! Tony and Zamir eat their way through Kansas City. So pumped for this one. I'll actually be flying back to NYC from KC as this thing airs. But I'll fire up the DVR as soon as I get home.
