I've ripped about 5GB of MP3s to throw on my new Rio Carbon for my trip to Denmark this weekend. These discs were all ripped at 256kbps. However, I have since decided that I'd rather bring them down to ~160kbps, so I can fit more on the Rio.

Is there a quick any easy way to convert existing MP3 files to a lower bitrate, or do I need to stay up all night re-ripping?

I've downloaded and attempted to convert them with BeSweet, but it seems to just kinda sit there, not doing anything.

Yep, just ask Stevie Ray Vaughan.

You can use something with a batch converter to reencode all the files automatically. I have useed Adobe Audition for doing just that. I'm sure there are many other software apps out there can can also batch convert them all automatically for you.

Re-encoding mp3s is generally bad idea. Going CD > 256 mp3 > 160 mp3 is going to be lower quality than straight CD > 160 mp3. But if it sounds good to you, then go for it.

That's probably right, but the difference would be pretty small. I guess if there wasnt 5GB worth of files to do, I'd also recommend just re-ripping the CD's. But with that much to do, I'd just reencode the mp3's.
