30s: Instead of one specific performer, for this decade I will pick the songs of Cole Porter. 40s: Billie Holiday 50s: Charles Mingus 60s: The Who 70s: Elvis Costello 80s: The Cure 90s: Pavement 00s: Broken Social Scene 10s: Three years into the decade, I think Beach House have taken an early lead for me.

seriously though. I like to think i listen to a pretty wide variety of music but when it comes down to a best it's usually a big name from that time.
I'll say 60's - Beatles 70's - Pink Floyd 80's - Pixies 90's - Pearl Jam 00's - Radiohead

Jorge's is hardly a list of indie obscurities. Most of the names on there are extremely well-known, especially now.
This is tough for me since so many of my favorite artists span four or five decades--I don't really affiliate any of them with any one decade. I will say that, as far as bands that I link exclusively to one decade go, there's no beating The Beatles for the 1960's or Roxy Music for the 1970's.

Now for the lame disclaimer: I was 7-16 years old throughout the 80s so my favorite music changed by the week. Right now, I'd probably go with U2 even though I wasn't into them at the time. These bands all competed for attention during this pivotal time period: The Who, Adam & The Ants, Huey Lewis & The News, Van Halen, and Big Daddy Kane.
The 00s are another tough one as Pearl Jam has remained my favorite artist - even though I don't think they were making the best music I normally listen to. I'd give that nod to Radiohead & Arcade Fire.
