this releases on May 15 and I've been enjoying the videos that have been coming out leading up to the release.

This is about the least funny thing Jack Black has been involved in.

I love Tenacious D. The HBO shorts were completely brilliant. Their film is complete shite. But I still love the hell out of it and laugh my ass off watching it.

Brilliant live act, too. I'm pretty stoked for this, truth be told.

pretty much. I hate trying to explain to people what is so funny about the D because it takes away from the humor.

The live DVDs probably come to the closest to explaining it. Whatever "it" is. Seeing them live is such a joy.

The HBO series, the first album, and the movie don't need an explanation as to why they are funny. They just are. I'd rather have an explanation for why this other stuff is so unfunny.

I love the D, but sometimes they get so consumed by their persona that they forget to be funny. "To Be the Best" and "Roadie", for example, are both pretty boring. Flight of the Conchords never really have that problem-- humor is always their #1 priority.

to me, the persona is the thing that I get the most enjoyment out of.

Haven't watched Roadie. But To Be The Best is pretty funny. I like their schtick.

The "To Be The Best" video is funny, yes, but the song really isn't.

I love everything Conchords. I only like bits and pieces from The D. The film was good, but I didn't guffaw as much as I still do with Wayne's World.

Sure, sure. I mean, I think it's fun. But that's the thing with the D, it's all about context. It's why the concerts and the HBO series were so funny. Something like Jesus Ranch is funny as a stand alone song. But in the context of the episode its goddamn hilarious.

The original HBO series were the tits. Ridiculously hilarious and absurd. The movie somewhat captured some of it the essence of the D. The D were most funny before they get extermely famous though/when jack black lost weight.

exactly! there are so many D songs that aren't inherently funny on their own, but in context of the band are funny. Wonderboy or City Hall aren't necessarily funny until you factor in the persona of the band. It has always been the band that carried the humor, not the songs.

"WonderBoy" has a few funny lines. "How about the power... to move you?" and "THERE, THE CREVASSE, FILL IT WITH YOUR MIGHTY JUICE" always make me laugh.

And "City Hall" is a great, hilarious song. "To Be the Best" is just nothing.
