Let's start with a personal favorite of mine; General Smedley Butler.

At the time of his death he was the most decorated marine in US history (so decorated, in fact, that he stood in for the christmas tree at the rockefeller center in '36 and '39)

He also foiled an attempted fascist coup in 1934, so that's pretty good.
