Just reading the last couple pages of this thread and I gotta say it seems conceivable that this movie isn't perfect. Now I only watched it once but I think maybe for example the movie would have been more effective without the whole cosmos unfolding/dinosaur sequence. I really love the part of the film that deals closely with the family though.
I dunno I think badlands is my favorite in the end I used to say Days of Heaven but I think Badlands has more replay value maybe.
Have we ever ranked the guys work??
Badlands Days of Heaven New World Tree Of Life The Thin Red Line

I haven't seen this film. I am a potential big fan, and I'm not going to label it 'pretentious' very easily. That said, I've just seen this on imdb, while looking around for forthcoming films:
Voyage of Time (2013)
An examination of the birth and death of the universe.
How will this not be pretentious?
Not really. From what I hear it's no different from any documentary on Nat Geo. Brad Pitt is narrating it. And I'm sure it will have Malick's favorite choices of classical music. I think it could be a cool IMAX experience.

Sorry folks, there's just nothing compelling about this film.
Let's make a movie about everyday life that everyone experiences with one dimensional characters that don't do any growing and stick some National Geographic in the middle. It'll be brilliant.

This is a mundane flick. Oh, and it's trite.
Yes, there is. We understand you don't like it, now please, STFU.

You're right. Prometheus had a plot and storyline worth making a movie about...
You know, Tree of Life was the first time I've ever heard of a pre-pubescent son being dissatisfied with his father and rebelling against the world.
That's a good point. The Tree Of Life was the very first film ever to tackle a theme that had been tackled before. Every other film in history is completely original.

Oh no, I finished it. This great, big, beautifully directed sequence about the birth of the world UNTIL ITS CLIMACTIC MOMENT - when a boy drowned and his brother threw some stones through a window.
Oh the character plots! A mom that believes all you need in the world is love, and a jaded father who never got to live out his dream and forced his kids to be tough in the world! HIT ME DAMMIT HIT ME!

Actually, it had three compelling points to make:
1. Never give the Blue Man Group access to HGH 2. Never stand within seeing distance of colliding spaceships. Even if they are both going in the opposite direction, and are miles and miles away, one of them will fucking fall on you. 3. OF COURSE IT'S STILL ALIVE AND IT'S COMING AFTER YOU! HAVEN'T YOU FUCKING SEEN THIS MOVIE BEFORE!

Uggggghhhhhhhh...
Like I said dude, it's easy to be that shallow and reductive about anything. Lawrence of Arabia is just some movie about dudes in the desert.

Especially Prometheus. I saw it ages ago and I still can't sleep at night, I'm so completely stunned at its originality.

See for a second a thought about indulging some of your points on Tree of Life but then this about Prometheus having a plot. You're clearly just completely aloof.

I mean, the storytelling on Prometheus wasn't great, but it did 'have a plot'. What I don't get is how you could say worth making a movie about. That's one heck of a subjective call. Is any movie worth making? Why? Couldn't it be argued that no sci-fi is worth making, when we haven't got much money and we could be making more important films to raise awareness of shit? In this case, 'a plot worth making a movie about' is just 'a plot that I like'.
